A New Era in Chester Hockey

In 2023, the Chester Castaways underwent a transformative change to become the South Shore Schooners, marking a new chapter in the team’s history. This rebranding reflects both a commitment to the region and the evolution of the team’s identity. Under new ownership, which stepped in to preserve junior hockey in Chester, the team has embraced its roots while expanding its reach to truly represent the broader South Shore and Annapolis Valley communities.

The decision to rename the team was inspired by the unique geography and shared maritime culture of the South Shore. The Schooner—a swift and agile sailing vessel that once dominated Nova Scotia’s waters—perfectly symbolizes the team’s vision: a unified group navigating challenges together, propelled by teamwork and resilience.

As members of the Nova Scotia Regional Junior C Hockey League, the South Shore Schooners compete alongside seven other teams in one of the province’s most spirited hockey circuits. The league provides a competitive platform for young athletes while fostering a strong sense of community across participating region.

Under the guidance of the new ownership, the Schooners have committed to maintaining the traditions of junior hockey in Chester while building on its legacy. This leadership transition in 2023 was vital to ensuring that hockey continued to thrive in the community, providing young athletes with opportunities to develop their skills and compete at a high level.
