Waste Heat Recovery a Success
Despite rising fuel costs, we are seeing lower fuel bills at our complex this year as our waste heat recovery system kicks into full gear.
We are using part of the waste heat to heat our hot water. It might not sound like a big deal except our rink typically uses 600,000 litres of hot water annually to make ice. At mid-season, we estimate our propane use has declined by 3500 litres (25%). That equates to a 5.5 tonne reduction in CO2 emissions from our complex.
This season our dressing rooms have been heated entirely by waste heat from our refrigeration system. We estimate that we have saved 13,000 kWh (5.6%) of electricity so far this year due to the change in dressing room heating and the more efficient refrigeration system. That equates to a further reduction of 11.6 tonnes of CO2, as well as reducing SOx emissions by 24kg and NOx by 10kg.
Three years ago The Park! Board of Trustees grappled with the choice of adding a waste heat recovery component to our refrigeration system. It was an extra $61,000 to an already strained budget. We are very thankful for the monetary support we received from the municipality, the provincial B_FIT programme, the federal RinC stimulus package and the EcoNovaScotia grant that made our waste heat recovery system a reality.
